Medical Elective Rotations at the
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University
Courses for Foreign Medical Students and Graduates
The courses are designed specifically for foreign medical students and graduates. They are in 4 week blocks and up to six blocks may be chosen. Each block consists of an introductory discussion, small group activities, clinical experiences under supervision and self-education; certain courses contain field work.
The principal objective is to familiarise foreign students with local medical problems and the provision of health care services at Chulalongkorn Hospital. Students will also have ample opportunity to get acquainted with Thai medical students and to enjoy social and cultural life in Thailand.
Specific Objectives
- Students will learn to diagnose and provide appropriate care for patients with common illnesses.
- Students will become acquainted with the hospital health care services.
- Students will have an opportunity to learn about Thai society, culture and establish friendship with Thai medical students.
Courses Offered
Course II – Anesthesiology II
Practical works on general and regional anaesthesia in uncomplicated cases and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
Course I – Infectious Disease
- Attend infectious ward rounds with residents and consultants.
- Perform simple and rapid diagnostic tests for common infectious diseases.
- Attend infectious disease conferences.
Course II – Hematology
- Attend ward rounds and outpatient clinics with haematology consultants and residents.
- Perform routine hematologic investigations including blood count, bone marrow aspiration, and screening coagulogram.
Course III – Endocrinology
- Attend outpatient diabetic and thyroid clinics.
- Attend endocrinology ward rounds with endocrinology consultants and residents.
Course IV – Medical Oncology
- Attend medical oncology clinics for common malignant tumours including unique cancers seen in South-East Asia.
- Attend oncology ward rounds with residents and attending physicians.
- Attend tumour clinics for multimodality approaches in cancer therapy.
- Observe special investigation procedures in the cancer biology laboratory.
Course V – Dermatology
- Attend skin wards with consultants.
- Attend skin out-patient clinics for common skin diseases including tropical skin diseases.
- Attend skin conference, clinical slides conference, case demonstration clinic, clinico – pathologic conference.
Course VI – General Medicine
- Attend ward staff rounds along with medical residents and students in the general medicine ward.
- Attend a multidisciplinary quality round and unit round conducted by ward staff and members of the general medicine unit.
- Participate in daily patient care rounds along with first year resident and medical students.
Course I – Tropical Microbiology
- Observe and assist in the routine laboratory diagnosis procedures of tropical bacterial, viral and fungal infectious diseases.
- Attend microbiology and infectious disease conferences.
Course I – Social Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Attend out-patient clinics.
- In–patient assignment under supervision.
- Assist surgical procedures.
- Perform delivery and some minor surgical procedures under close supervision.
Course II – Family Planning and Human Reproduction
Course I – General Ophthalmology
- Attend ward round, case conference, journal club, seminars and activities of the department.
- Attend out-patients, practise simple minor surgery and ophthalmic diagnostic tests.
- Observe surgical operations, advance diagnostic procedure, ultrasound, automatic visual field, Topographic Modeling System, Imagenet, laser etc.
Course I – Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery
- Attend orthopaedic out-patient clinic and subspecialty clinic, paediatric clinic, scoliotic clinic, hip clinic and spine clinic.
- Attend in-patient orthopaedic surgical ward rounds.
- Assist surgical operations in the operating theatre.
- Perform some minor surgical procedures under staff supervision.
- Partake in case discussion and conference.
- Attend an inter-hospital orthopaedic conference monthly.
Course I – Otolaryngology
- Attend out-patient departments, ward rounds, grand rounds and other activities.
- Observe and assist E.N.T. operations in the operating room.
- Attend special clinics, for example, audiological clinics and allergy clinics, etc.
Course I – Intensive Course in Medical Parasitology
Case demonstration, lecture and laboratory work in medical protozoology, medical helminthology, medical entomology and immunology of parasitic infections.
Course I – Short Training in Surgical Pathology
Perform short training in surgical pathology under supervision and take chance of assembling the surgical pathology protocol.
Course II – Short Training in Neuropathology
- Lecture or group discussion on neuropathology, e.g. congenital malformation, etc.
- Observe brain cutting.
- Self-study on microscopic slides and gross specimens.
Course IIII – Short Training in Cardiovascular Pathology
Lecture or group discussion in normal morphology of heart and blood vessels, pathology of heart diseases, for example congenital heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, infective endocarditis, etc.
Course I – Geographical Paediatrics
Studies in general paediatric ward and special clinics, including tropical paediatrics, geographical gastroenterology, common infectious diseases (rheumatic fever, postinfectious glomerulonephritis, dengue hemorrhagic fever).

Course l – Community Medicine Practice
- Practice of community problem-solving approach in rural areas.
- Study of basic health service subsystems in both urban and rural settings.
- Discussion on prevention and control of diseases.
- Primary medical care practice including outpatient care, in-patient care, and emergency care.
Course I – Diagnostic Imaging
- Study diagnostic imaging with clinical correlation.
- Interpret medical imaging such as plain radiography, mammography, special procedures, ultrasonography, angiography, computed tomography and MRI under supervision.
- Assist in the performance of special procedures in diagnostic imaging.
- Attend conferences, seminars and lectures.

Course II – Tropical Neuroradiology
- Study diagnostic imaging of tropical neuroradiology with clinical correlation.
- Interprets imaging of tropical neuroradiology, such as plain radiography and MRI, under supervision.
- Assist in the performance of special procedures in neuroradiology.
- Attend neuroradiological conferences.
- Study teaching files in tropical neuroradiology.
Course III –Clinical Radiation Therapy
- Attend out-patient clinic
- Tumour clinic
- Follow up clinic Office
- Gynecologic staging clinic
- ENT – Radiotherapy clinic
- Attend in-patient ward round
- During radiation therapy patients
- Terminal patients
- Chemotherapy patients
- Attend Radiation Therapy
- Brachytherapy for gynecologic patients

- Planning system including fixation and compensation
- Computer planning system
- Simulator
- Mould or orfit shell fixation
- Tissue compensation
Course IV – Nuclear Medicine
- Study diagnostic nuclear medicine investigations including non-imaging and radionuclide imaging (SPECT, PET, SPECT/CT, PET/CT).
- Study radionuclide in thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer and others Follow up thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer patients after radioiodine treatment.
- Attend nuclear medicine conferences and interdepartmental conferences.
- Study teaching files of nuclear imaging.
Course I – Practical General Surgery (limited number of students)
- Attend in-patient ward rounds.
- Assist out-patient clinics.
- Assist surgical operation in the operating theatre.
- Perform minor surgical procedures under supervision.
If Students wish to attend the specialty course (apart from Course 1) at the Department of Surgery, they must complete the confirmation sheet in three orders after the “Course Name”.

Course I – General Rehabilitation Medicine
- Attend general rehabilitation out-patient clinic and subspecialty clinics such as Diabetic foot clinic, Orthotic- prosthetic clinic, Hand rehabilitation clinic.
- Attend the Thai Red Cross Rehabilitation Center ward rounds.
- Attend Electro diagnostic (EMG) laboratory.
- Observe the physical therapy unit, occupational therapy unit, hydrotherapy unit. Attend departmental conferences and seminars.
